Burgas (Bourgas) is the administrative centre of Burgas Province. This is the second-largest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast (after Varna), industrial and a tourist centre. There is Burgas International Airport connecting point to major Black Sea resorts in the country such as Sunny Beach, Nesebar, Sozopol, Dyuni ,Elenite, Varna. Bourgas is a successor of a Greek city. In the Middle Ages there was a small fortress called Pirgos ( the Greek for "tower") and the place was most probably used as a watchtower. In the 17th century the settlement grew in the modern area of the city. Most of the inhabitants (about 3 000) were Greek at the time of the Liberation. Burgas soon became a city of well-developed industry and trade and a major centre on the southern Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. Many oil and chemical companies were gradually built. Salt and iron are also traded abroad. The railway station, opened in 1903, gave an additional boost to the city's expansion. The town has kept many of its 19th and early 20th century architecture. The Port of Burgas is the largest in Bulgaria adding significantly to the regional economy.
