Dobrich is the major city of a Dobrich province, that is a province in northeastern Bulgaria. In 1949 the town was named Tolbuhin in honour of the Soviet General Fedor Tolbuhin, whose 3rd Ukrainian Front was responsible for liberating the region from Nazi rule. The name of the town reverted to Dobrich in 1990, after the fall of Communism. There is a part of the town, named “the old town”, that is a small district of reconstructed renaissance buildings. Dobrich is an agricultural centre for all of northern Bulgaria.
