The town is the main city of a province Lovech in central Bulgaria. Lovech is famous for its Covered bridge built by the self-taught master-builder, named Kolyu Ficheto. Another interesting site in the town is a well preserved medieval fortress which played a key role in the rebellion of the brothers Asen and Petar in 1186 which led to the establishment of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom. The national hero Vasil Levski, a freedom fighter during the battle for independence from the Ottoman rule, centered his revolutionary organisation (BRCC) in Lovech. Right next to the medieval fortress there is a large stone monument of Vasil Levski. In the town there is an area which has preserved the architecture and atmosphere of the time of the Bulgarian national revival.
The first foreign language school in Bulgaria was set up in Lovech in 1950 - three languages were taught in this school - English, French and German.
