Pazardzhik is a province located in southern Bulgaria. The province is abundant with water resources and its main waterway is Maritsa River. The town is situated along the two banks Maritza. Its catchment basin includes Topolnitsa River and Luda Yana River. The town is founded in 1845 with the name Tatar Pazardzhik, on the place of a previously existing sattlement (from the second half of the XV century, on the left bank of the river Maritza). One of the interesting sites in the town fulfilled with Bulgarian spirit and culture, is the St.Bogoroditsa (God Mother) church, that preserves the most impressive iconostatasis in Bulgaria, made by master artists of the Debar School and contains wood-carves scenes of the New and Old Testament; there are also icons painted by Stanislav Dospevski. The backbone of the economy in this region is industry. The "Batashki Vodnosilov Pat" is an important hydrocomlex consisting of three hydro power plants-"Peshtera", "Batak" and "Aleko" with combyned capacity of around 250 MW. Of national and European importance is the cooper extracting industry, with major mines located around Panagyurishte (Asarel and Medet), Elshitsa, Tsar Asen and Radka mine. There is also machine building industry developed here (lead acid batteries), Panagyurishte (optical), Velingrad. In Peshtera there is flourishinig pharmaceutical industry with more than 1 000 employees in the plant. In Belovo the paper industry is developed. Timber industry is very important in the southern part of the region (Rodopes – Peshtera, Batak, Rakitovo, Velingrad). There is also well develpped manufacturing of textiles in Velingrad, there is a footware plant in Peshtera, food precessing industry in most of the towns of the region, the agriculture - in the fertile central parts of the province. The most important crops are orchards (apples, plums and strawberries), grapes, wheat, barley, rye and rice; in the mountainous areas livestock breeding is relatively well developed. The road network is not dense. Through the region runs the Trakia (Trakya) motorway; the main railway between Sofia and Plovdiv, to Peshtera and to Panagyurishte. In the province there are several military airports. Every town and village in the region, as it is everywhere in Bulgaria, is provided with electricity, drinking water and telephone network. Each town and some villages are provided with Internet connection, and the cellular phone coverage is almost 100%, as most people own GSMs.
