Plovdiv (Philippoupoli, Philippoupolis, Filibe) is the second largest city in Bulgaria. The city is the administrative centre of Plovdiv Province in southern Bulgaria. Plovdiv is also the largest and most important city of the historical region of Thrace, famous for its ancient and diverse culture and millenary history.
The city is located on both banks of the Maritsa river in the central part of Upper Thrace, lying at the threshold of the Rhodopes. Just like Rome, Plovdiv is mushroomed in between its seven hills. Nowadays, since the 1900s there is only a small outcrop of rock left to show where the hills once stood.
There are two key highways make headway into or around Plovdiv - Sofia-Edime-Istanbul and Sofia-Stara Zagora-Burgas routes. Therea are three bus terminals and three train stations.
According to what was written post Bronze Age, there was a Thracian fortified settlement named Eumolpias. It was conquered by Philip II of Macedon, the father of Alexander the Great who renamed the settlement after his own name - Philippopolis (in Greek - "the city of Philip". Later it was incorporated in the Roman Empire and renamed to Trimontium ("The City of Three Hills"). At this time it served as capital (metropolis) of the province of Thrace and was called "The largest and most beautiful of all cities". The most important military road in the Balkans - Via Militaris, passed through the city.
The Huns ruined the town in 447. The Slavs settled in the Balkan Peninsula in the 6th century, introducing the names Pulden and Plundiv.
Kham Krum seized the fortress in 815 and in the following 5 centuries the town was ruled by Bulgarians after that - conquered by Byzantium. The Crusaders demolished the town several times on their way to Mecca.
In 1365 the town fell under the Turkish yoke. With the name Filibe it became an important administrative, craft and military center, seat of the ruler of Rumelia district.
The 19th century brought Plovdiv closer to the Rennaissance from the cultural opression during the Turkish occupation. That was the time of spiritual awakening when the Bulgarian people began their struggle for religious, cultural and political independence.
The Liberation from the Turkish yoke came in 1878.
