Shumen (Shoumen, Shumla, Shumnu) is a town in the northeastern part of Bulgaria, a capital of Shumen Province. From 1950 – 1965 it was called Kolarovgrad.
The town was founded in the early Middle Ages as a fortress and a settlement next to it. By the end of second Bulgarian Kingdom it was given the name of Shoumen. In the town there are interesting monuments of architecture, such as The Tower of the Old Clock, 1740, Tamboul Mosque and Kourshoum Cheshma, 1744. There also can be seen unique monuments of culture are preserved from ancient times to the present. Here are the first Bulgarian capitals – Pliska and Veliki Preslav. Here is Madara - the Bulgarian Troy, with the unique Madara Horseman, that in 1979 it is declared as a monument with world significance and it is placed under the eegie of UNESCO. Another interesting site is the old Shoumen Fortress.
