Sofia is the biggest city and the capital of Bulgaria. Sofia has thousand of years history, that originates in Neolithic period; chalocolithic settlement has been recently discovered in the very center of modern Sofia. The first recorded name of Sofia – Serdica is given by the Thracian Serdi tribe, that settled here in the 7th century BC. The Slavonic name of Sofia is Sredetz, the Byzantines called it Triaditsa. The modern city of Sofia was named in the 14th century. In Greek, word sofia means wisdom. The town was rebuilt by the Byzantines after the Hun invasion in 5th century. There are cold and thermal mineral water springs in and around the city and with them Sofia was famous from old ancient times. The water is still available today and has numerous qualities. Mineral water springs may be found in the city center, as well as in the neighbourhoods: Kniazevo, Gorna Bania, Bankia, Ovcha Kupel and Ivaniane. One of the interesting sites in this city are The Roman thermal baths under the Sofia Mineral Baths and a Roman residence with elaborate mosaics is below the "Rila" hotel. The population of Sofia today is1 250 000 people. Rapidly the city's image changed to a modern, European capital, a business, cultural and administrative centre. There are a great number of art galleries, museums, churches, cultural centres, theatres, cinemas, music halls.
