Recently Varna is Bulgaria's second largest city. This place was inhabited even before the Greeks established the colony of Odessos there about 6th century B.C. It means, that a civilization existed on this land from nearly 8 thousand years. During the time of the Slavs and later, under the Romans, Varna became a major port trading with Constantinople, Venice and Dubrovnik. In the time of the slavery, since 1393, the Turks made it an important military centre. Nowadays it is the main port, beautiful Black Sea resort and business centre. In the heart of the city is one of the most emblematic symbols of Varna – the 19th century Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin, which contains a finely carved iconostasis and bishop's throne, some interesting murals and stained glass. There are also remains of the largest Roman public building in Bulgaria – the 2nd century thermae; their historical meaning and ancient atmosphere are an attraction for the tourists. Another interesting site is the park and the granite monument, which commemorates the Battle of Varna in 1444. In this place 6 centuries ago, 30,000 Crusaders were waiting to sail to Constantinople when they were attacked by 120,000 Turks. The young Polish King Ladislas (Vladislav Yagelo) was killed in a bold attempt to capture the Sultan Murad. The subsequent retreat foreshadowed Christendom's general retreat before the advancing Ottomans. Another ancient site in the city is the Aladja Monastery, about 4 kilometres from one of the most beautiful resorts of Bulgaria and Varna - Golden Sands. This is a cliff monastery - the monks' cells and rooms were hewn out of the soft white limestone cliff. This is not a confident statement of conviction like Rila or Bachkovo monasteries. This was a refuge for the monks – hermits, who lad an ascetic and silent life here.
